Background Information
Sjögren syndrome type B antigen (SS-B) also known as Lupus La protein was originally defined by its reactivity with autoantibodies from patients with Sjögren syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus. SS-B/La is a member of an autoantigens commonly referred to as extractable nuclear antigens (ENAs) composed of protein and RNA. The other ENAs are SS-A/Ro, RNP, and Sm. SS-B/La antibodies are found primarily in 60% of patients with Sjögren syndrome and 15% of lupus erythematosus (LE). Antibodies to ENAs are common in patients with connective tissue diseases or systemic rheumatic diseases including mixed connective tissue disease, Sjögren syndrome, systemic sclerosis, LE, and polymyositis /dermatomyositis.
