Background Information
Testosterone a C19 steroid, is the most potent naturally secreted androgen. Testosterone is primarily secreted by the test of males and the ovaries of females and small amounts by the adrenal glands. Testosterone plays key roles in health and wellbeing in both males and females. In the blood Testosterone is bound to SHBG (60 %) and in lower quantity to other protein such as albumin. Only the measurement of Free Testosterone (< 1% of Total Testosterone) allows the measurement of biologically active hormone. Testosterone levels decline gradually with age in men and free testosterone levels are elevated in women with hyperandrogenism associated with hirsutism in the presence or absence of polycystic ovarian disease. Moreover, free testosterone measurements may be more useful than total testosterone in situations where SHBG is increased or decreased such as in hypothyroidism and obesity.
